About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Perhaps the most famous trilogy in English literature, in which Galsworthy chronicled the fortunes and fates of lawyer, Soames Forsyte, and his family as it lived its collective lives during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The family was keenly aware of its social status as "new money" with individual family members torn between duty to family and personal pleasure. This is a single volume, consisting of three novels and two "interludes" published between 1906 and 1921. It is an early printing of the American memorial edition issued in 1935 after the author's death. About 6 x 8 1/2 inches, 921 pages plus a six-page, fold-out Forsyte family tree. Bound in maroon cloth-covered boards with gold lettering and graphic design on front cover and spine and including a frontispiece photo of Galsworthy as well as his preface to the original edition and Ada Galsworthy's preface to this edition. Sorry, no dustjacket (what appears to be the dj's front flap with the original $3.00 price is laid-in.). Book shows a bit of age, with light wear on corners and edges, lightly age-toned margins in text and light soiling on text edges. Also some light creasing within text. That noted, book remains complete, with family history intact, basically clean and unmarked except for previous owner's name and date on fep. Binding is tight and firm. A very decent reading copy of this edition. It needs to be noted that these novels won Galsworthy the Nobel Prize in 1932. [Due to its size and weight, priority/express orders, or orders from outside the U.S., will require additional postage.]
