[Forgery] Some Disordered Interior Geometries

by WOODMAN, Francesca (1958-1981)

Condition: Fine

[Philadelphia]: Synapse Press, 1981. First Edition. Pictorial Wrappers. Fine. Counterfeit issue of the first printing of an original artist's book created by Woodman while she was studying in Rome. Tall, slim 8vo (229 x 165 mm): [24 erratically numbered]pp, with 16 reproductions of Woodman's photographic studies. Printed pink-lavender wrappers (the actual first printing of 500 copies has pale pink wrappers). A pristine example. Drucker, The century of artists' books, pp. 339-40. Somerville, "Clues to a Lost Woman: The Photography of Francesca Woodman," The Missouri Review, vol. 33, no. 3 (fall 2010), pp. 79-91, On the acid-brown, deteriorating pages from a nineteenth-century geometry exercise notebook in Italian ("Esercizi Graduati di Geometria"), Woodman superimposed 16 photographs, penciled notes (diary entries, poems), glue stains, and blobs of white correction fluid over arcane mathematical formulas, thus juxtaposing the exercise book's logical proofs against the unanswerable questions posed by Woodman's photographs (chiefly self-portraits in a variety of poses, parts of her body often hidden beneath sheets of wallpaper, behind masks, in cabinets, engaging in an endless game of hide-and-seek.) After Some Disordered Interior Geometries was printed, about the time of Woodman's suicide, in 1981, the publisher returned 450 copies from the total edition of 500 to the artist's family, which distributed an unknown number as a tribute at her funeral. (OCLC list 16 institutions holding the book in special collections.) This is a bootlegged copy (unauthorized reproduction) of that first printing. In addition to the pink-lavender wrappers, it can be distinguished from the genuine first printing by the following points: Pages of the bootlegged copy are darker and their type bolder, and they show a distinctive moire pattern. Most of the photos of the copy have less contrast and detail. All pages of the copy are shifted 3-4mm higher on the plate. The bottom line of text on p. 7 of the copy is guillotined, and the final "m" of the final text line of p. 9 of the copy is largely absent. The bottom staple of the copy is 60mm from the bottom page edge (the first printing is 64mm). N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. (Fine Editions Ltd is a member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association, and we subscribe to its codes of ethics.).
