London: William Heinemann, 1937. First edition. Hardcover. Good + overall. Maillart was a Swiss adventurer travel writer and photographer, as well as accomplished international athlete. (She was captain of the Swiss Women's land hockey team, an international skier, and competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics as a sailor in the Olympic monotype competition). From the 1930s onwards, she explored oriental republics of the USSR. This book is the account of her 3500 mile trip from Manchuria to Sinkiang (then known as Chinese Turkestan), a journey that involved travel on trains, trucks, on foot, horse and camel back.

8vo, vi, 312pp, 64pp illustrations, one folding map & 2 maps in text. Original burgundy cloth, gilt title on spine, which is sunned. Light foxing near the covers. OCLC: 43681644.
