Philadelphia, PA: Lippincott, Grambo, and Co., 1853., 1853.. Good. - Octavo, brown cloth decorated in blind on both covers and titled in gilt with a vignette in gilt on the spine. The binding is bumped & lightly rubbed & the head of the spine is chipped. xii pages & pages [13]-391 plus [34]-page publisher's catalog. Illustrated with a frontispiece with a tissue guard & an extra pictorial title in black & white. There is scattered foxing, including to the frontispiece, tissue guard & pictorial title. Good. <p>First edition.<p>From the library of Civil War veteran Louis Livingston with his faded signature on the front endpaper. Livingston, a member of the notable Dutchess County, New York family, was a Captain and later Aide de Camp in the 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the XII Corps. He served under General Samuel Crawford and was breveted to Major for his service at Antietam and to Lieutenant Colonel for "conspicuous gallantry" at Gettysburg.

Considered the first American career diplomat, this consular official held positions in the United Kingdom and Portugal; in 1948-49 his diary was published as "The Journal of Benjamin Moran, 1857-65," and chronicles the English reaction to the American Civil War. Bold "Ever truly yours / Benj'n. Moran / Chas. L. Wilson, Esqr." on a 4½" X 1" slip clipped from a letter, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Lightly age toned. Verso, in Moran's hand, reads: "Chester will draw next week. I have the watches. How shall I send them?"

Benjamin Moran (b. Franklin County, Pennsylvania, 1820 - d. Braintree, Essex, on 20 June 1886) worked at the United States Legation (later the US Embassy) in London from 1853 to 1874. In 1853, around the time that James Buchanan, who was from the same county in Pennsylvania as Moran, became US ambassador in London, Moran became a temporary clerk at the legation. In 1854, he gained a permanent post and, in 1857, he was appointed Assistant Secretary and the he was promoted to Secretary, serving until 1874. From 1857, he kept a private diary which was subsequently published; the diary is of interest mainly because it documents how the US Civil War was seen in the UK.
