About This Item

Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1964; First Edition; 8vo, 406 pages plus viii page index at the back; brown and black cloth boards; gilt titles; turquoise end papers. Extraordinary life and career of pioneering photographer Frank Jay Haynes, who with his camera and portable darkroom chronicled the natural landscapes, towns, mines, farms, ranches, Indian camps, river boats, forts, and railways of the frontier West, and was appointed first official photographer for the newly created Yellowstone National Park, as well as its first concessionaire. Magnificently illustrated with 422 Haynes photos, including over 25 striking individual Indian portraits, many of them full-page. Of special note is a photo of Excelsior geyser in Yellowstone, greatest geyser in volume ever known to man. Taken in 1888, it is believed to be the only one in existence, as Excelsior ceased eruption that year. Very Good Plus, in a Very Good dust jacket that has a short transparent tape reinforcement at the top extremity of the spine panel. Clean, crisp, bright, binding tight, sound, and square, corners sharp, no ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind.
