About This Item

Cambridge, MA: American Folk-Lore Society, 1923. First edition. Hardcover in full cloth. Very Good. No dust jacket issued. Octavo ( standard size) . Slight wear to edges and corners of boards. Spine slightly faded. Head and tail of spine bumped. 219 p. w/ list of informants and writers, bibliography, riddles, toasts, game songs, and a discussion of folk ways. An important work detailing folklore in various forms from the African American residents of the islands east of Port Royal and North of Hilton Head on the Carolina coast. Interestingly, because the author stayed with African American families during her visit, she gained much greater access to their stories. Many of the tales are recorded in dialect, but not all.
