At the beginning of World War I the Royal Flying Corps had 63 primitive aeroplanes and were flown by army officers. At the end of the war in 1918 there were 99 RAF (Royal Air Force) Squadrons on the Western Front. "The first RFC commander was General Sir David Henderson, and a friend of his was Maurice Baring. Barring bought himself some khaki, got Henderson to help him with his puttees, and went to France with him as his Private Secretary. Trenchard took over from Henderson in 1915, and from then until 1919 Barring was 'Boom's' right-hand man.
