About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1926. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Octavo. 300 + ads pp. Decorated maroon cloth. A few faint soil marks on the cloth, small smudge on front fly, else a very good copy with the text fresh and clean, lacking the dust jacket. White headed the NAACP for a quarter of a century.

Warmly inscribed by White to author Theodore Stempfel, with Stempfel's copy attractive contemporary bookplate: "For Theodore Stempfel, With the admiration and affection of his friend. Walter White." Stempfel translated a number of works on the American 'Turnerbund' movement, a gymnastic union with early roots in Germany, that in the 19th-century was a proponent of socialism and the abolition of slavery.
