Description:

New York: American Tract Society, 1863. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. Burgundy cloth cover with gilt lettering on spine only. Corners quite bumped, some cover spotting, spine worn at extrem. Front free endpaper has been removed. On the front fixed ep are rules of the Methodist Library, which is the only clue this was ever part of any sort of library, there are no stamps or pockets or etc. There is, however, some pencil here and there, applied by a child (I guess). About very good. Experiences of a traveling religious book salesman in the Pennsylvania and Virginia mountain areas in the 1840s.

Gillespie, March 8, 1864. First edition. The travels of Jonathan Cross, a colporteur (seller of bibles and religious books), in western Pennsylvania and Western Virginia, in the late 1840's. A combination preacher-minister-teacher-bookseller, Cross describes his work among the mountain poor, and his efforts at organizing other colporteurs in Appalachia. Along the way, he gives us some vivid descriptions of the daily life of people in the region. He was very successful at his work, having gathered 300 other colporteurs in his mission (visiting some 500,000 families). Sabin 24635. Hardbound. Good. PA55 Language: eng. 1st Edition.. Hardcover.
