Five Families: Mexican Case Studies in the Culture of Poverty, by Oscar Lewis (1914-1970), published in 1975, is a truly important work in modern cultural anthropology, Five Families is a dramatic and forceful account of the men, women, and children of five Mexican families and the impoverished communities in which they live. The author earned his Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University and was a professor of anthropology at Brooklyn College, Washington University and the University of Illinois. From his first visit to Mexico in 1943, Mexican peasants and city dwellers were among his major interests. In addition to several books, Lewis published widely in both academic journals and popular periodicals. He was the recipient of many distinguished grants and fellowships, including two Guggenheims.
