Brodkey, a notoriously obsessive personality, took over 30 years of writing, rewriting, and numerous publisher firings, before agreeing to release his monumental next book, "The Runaway Soul," praised by critic Harold Bloom as "unparalleled in American prose fiction since the death of William Faulkner." Enthusiastic blurbs on the rear dust jacket panel by Frank O’Connor, John Cheever, Mark Schorer, and Nancy Hale — who ranks Brodkey with J. D. Salinger as post war youth’s greatest literary figures.
