First edition, with publisher's review slip tipped-in at the front. x,69 pp. Slim octavo, black cloth, gilt lettering at spine. A near fine copy; faint foxing to endpapers, and few spots of marginal soiling, else clean and crisp. In a dust jacket which is heavily foxed, being more apparent on the thin strip of white at the fold-in of the upper panel and on the white lower panel, shows light edgewear, and has a closed tear at the lower fold-in. Lowell's second book, containing "The Quaker Garveyard in Nantucket," it was greeted with critical acclaimn.

Lowell's scarce first book, limited to a total of 250 copies printed. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front free endpaper to poet Randall Jarrell: "For Randall/with affection and admiration/and no apologies for dogma,/Cal." Lowell was nicknamed Caligula at preparatory school, and the diminutive "Cal" stuck with him throughout his life. An anthology featuring works by 72 poets, most of them Black or people of color. Besides Major, poets include Julian Bond, Victor Hernández Cruz, David Henderson, Calvin Hernton, Marvin Jackman, Bob Kaufman, Ishmael Reed, Sonia Sanchez, and Gloria and Stephen Tropp. Lengthy prologue by the editor, Walter Lowenfels. (For the full list, please see the second photo.) Clarence Major (b. 1936), who inscribed this book, has written more than a dozen collections of poetry. He is a distinguished professor emeritus of 20th-century American literature at the University of California, Davis. This is a review copy, with the Random House notice laid in. Copyright ends at 1965, No Edition, No Printing Stated. Last page has 72-73-74-75 10 9. The American Edition is the Second Edition. This is a First American Edition with a 1972 (later) Printing. The dust jacket has some soiling with tears at edges of the spine and corners, see photos. Book itself is in Near Fine condition with the exception of a stain inside the cover which transferred to the FEP and bled onto two pages beneath. (Lowered the rating to Very Good). The black boards with blue lettering have bumped spine edges.
