Contemporary brown calf-backed spine and marbled boards, armorial bookplate, spine lack 3 centimeters at head. Very good. 3 vols in one. 13 pages in text. 31 x 26 cm. Thirty-eight engraved plates, sepia aquatints. First published 1795: "These designs were among the earliest of the cottage and villa books which became so popular during the first quarter of the nineteenth century." [see: COLVIN, p.642]. ABBEY LIFE 48. ARCHER 259.2. "The title of Plaw's book recalls the long-standing ideal of the English country estate as a place of rural retirement.......in addition to several designs for fences and ha-has, he illustrated a wide variety of rustic and picturesque structures.......Plaw was the first practicing British architect to publish a detailed design for an entire village (Plate 33).......Plaw's influence was more widespread than his practice. He was, for example, the first British architect to recommend the use of pise, or rammed earth, in building cottages.....Plaw helped establish several important Romantic alternatives to the prevailing Palladian canons of architectural design." Text provides detailed descriptions of each plate. One plate toned.

18 pages in text. 31 x 26 cm. First edition. Forty-one engraved plates, sepia aquatints. Some plates with plans to scale. COLVIN p.642. ..."these were among the earliest of the cottage and villa books which became so popular during the first quarter of the 19th century." Plaw emigrated to Prince Edward island, Canada in 1810 where he designed some buildings. ABBEY LIFE 49.

29 pages in text. 31 x 28 cm. Engraved title, twenty plates, 12 sepia aquatints, 8 engraved, first plate is an etching. First and only edition. COLVIN p.75 notes he was not a sensitive architect as his designs illustrate; however; the concept that the picturesque is best found in vernacular architecture makes this an interesting book. ABBEY LIFE 4.
