The Great Ouse river rises in Northamptonshire, skirts a mile or so of the Oxfordshire border before beginning its journey through Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire, the Isle of Ely and Norfolk to the Wash. It flows through towns such as Buckingham, Bedford, Huntingdon, Ely and Kings Lynn. Its tributaries, with such delightful names as the Wissey, the Kym and the Lark, add the counties of East and West Suffolk, Essex and Hertfordshire. They also connect towns such as Leighton Buzzard, Cambridge, Bury St. Edmunds and Thetford with the main river. Whilst the river as a whole covers such a wide area it is as a Fenland river with extensive drainage and water conservation systems that the Great Ouse is usually considered. Rodney Tibbs has written "Fenland River" not so much as a guide book, in which role it is however exceptionally good, but as a book covering many aspects including angling, boating, wild life, drainage, conservancy, history and topography. The large number of photographs are of a high standard and capture the atmosphere of the river and the towns and countryside through which it flows.
