About This Item

London: Welbecson. First Edition . Hardcover. Good+. W.A. Rouch photos. An incomplete ten volume set: includes 'special volume', covering the years 1919-1923, and Volumes I-IX, covering 1924-1932; MISSING Volume X, 1933. Folios, filled with biographies and fine photogravures of famous horses; uniform bindings, brown cloth with white cloth spines, top edge gilt; overall, good plus (all have lightly sunned spines and moderately foxed text and plates). Special Volume, 1919-1923: No. 198 of 600 copies, soiled and spotted spine, frayed at top. Vol. I, 1924: No. 716/1000. Vol. II, 1925: No. 583/1000, spots on spine, boards bowed. Vol. III, 1926: No. 423/1000, spots on spine, covers soiled, and brown cloth separating from white in rear. Vol. IV, 1927: No. 156/1000, spots on spine. Vol. V, 1928: No. 371/1000, both covers bowed, spots on front cover. Vol. VI, 1929: No. 124/1000, spots on spine, soiled covers, more foxing than others. Vol. VII, 1930: No. 274/1000, soiled front cover. Vol. VIII, 1931: No. 104/1000, bottom corners and pages bumped. No. IX, 1932: No. 90/1000, bumped at upper corners. In spite of the numerous small flaws, the set looks handsome; the worst deficit is the foxing, which affects every plate at least somewhat. The photography, and the printing of the photos, is quite excellent. Each photo-plate has an onionskin interleaf.
