About This Item

Stittsville, Ontario: Canada's Wings, 1979. 186 pp. Blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spine; illustrated endpapers. Wraparound dj art by Graham Wragg; illustrated with black and white plates. Light wear on the corners of the dustjacket; no interior markings. Included here is a dropped-in unopened letter, dated April 18 1950 and stamped as being sent on the First Official Airmail Jetliner Toronto to New York. The cancellation and destruction of the Avro Arrow was one of the dumbest things ever done by a Canadian politician. William French said, "Peden says the decision to cancel the Arrow ranks with the most serious errors ever made by a Canadian politician in peacetime." And Dick Goodwin said, "His research has been meticulous. This is a book which should be read by every Canadian, not simply those interested in Canada's military history or the aircraft industry." The Chapters are: The Timing of the Cancellation of the Arrow; Destruction of Ten Arrows; The Disadvantages of Copying Designs; RCAF Interested in New Engine of 12000 Pounds Thrust; Design Objectives; Hon. Ralph Campney Makes the First Overtures to the Americans Regarding Possible Sale of the Arrow to Them; Prime Minister Diefenbaker Elected; First Flight of the Arrow - Test Pilot Jan Zurakowski; Financial Difficulties of the Conservative Government and Growing Costs of Arrow Program; Prime Minister Diefenbarker Announces Cancellation of Arrow February 20th 1959; Analysis of Prime Minister Diefenbaker's Allegations on Bomarcs; Some Consequences of Cancellation Decision; and Latest Russian Bomer Threat - The Lesson of the Arrow.. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good+. Illus. by Graham Wragg;. 8vo. Book.
