Tokyo: [The author?], 1897. Oblong 4to, 23 x 31 cm., pictorial title, 18 leaves, 16 of which are illustration, 2 text. A very good copy stitched in the Japanese style in original pictorial wrappers. Stain to edge of front wrapper. Cartoons in Bigot's inimitable style on the subject of Japanese attacks on foreigners, in particular "Heaving a foreigner over a cliff for fun, Kobe" and "L'Affaire de Nikko" in August 1897. Georges Ferdinand Bigot (1860-1927) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from the age of 12. Enthralled by the Japanese pavilion at the Exposition Universelle of 1878, he went to Japan where he was employed illustrating newspapers and teaching French and watercolour painting. He learnt Japanese, travelled extensively, married a Japanese woman, and returned to France in 1899. Héléne Conevin, De la gravure à la caricature: Le Japon de Meiji vu par G. Bigot, 1990; Worldcat shows one copy only at the National Diet Library

Japan: Yokohama Seishi Bunsha, 1895. First Edition. Rare English-language guide to Japanese domestic wares, with 76 fully-illustrated items. This booklet focuses on a traditional domestic interior and features a beautiful double-page plate showing the layout and arrangement of a Japanese period home, showing respective zones for food preparation, cooking and the entertainment of guests. Items specifically illustrated and described include lacquer wares, a charcoal-burning stove, lanterns, wooden buckets and items used in the tea ceremony. The Sakuteiki, or "Records of Garden Making," was written nearly 1000 years ago, making it the oldest work on Japanese gardening; in fact, the oldest book on gardening in the world! In this edition of the Sakuteiki, the authors provide both an English-language translation of this classic work; and an introduction to the cultural and historical context that led to the development of Japanese gardening. A Japanese court noble wrote the Sakuteiki during the Heian period (794-1184). During this critical era in Japanese history cultural influences on poetry, clothing-and gardening-that had been imported from China and Korea over the previous centuries were reexamined and reinterpreted into their unique Japanese forms. The Sakuteiki contains the first systematic record of this new… Read More

The Tokaido -- the name of this highway today epitomizes a golden age of Japan's past. This "Eastern Sea Road", which connected the emperor's capital in Kyoto and the seat of the shogun's administration in Edo (now Tokyo) was heavily traveled in all seasons; the numerous prints and guidebooks about the Tokaido represent the time of prosperity and peace when even the average citizen could undertake the adventure of travel along this highway. It was Hiroshige who immortalized the Tokaido. In the famous prints of the fifty-three stages reproduced in this book, this master artist of the ukiyo-e print captured the beauty, romance, adventure, mystery, and joy - all the myriad and glowing facets of the people and places, in all seasons and times of day, of the Tokaido highway. Hiroshige's… Read More

From flyleaf: Between the years 1814 and 1878 there was published in Japan a series of woodblock printed volumes entitled Hokusai Manga, or Hokusai's Sketches from Life, which was destined to be one of the most popular art publications ever issued anywhere in the world. With its rich tapestry of life as it was lived in the boisterous Tokyo of the day and its magical evocation of the beauties of the Japanese countryside, it was an immediate best-seller in Japan, and then, upon the West's discovery of Japanese art, went on to win the hearts of people everywhere. It is from this amazing book, amazing both in execution and breadth of scope, that the… Read More
