NY: Cornish, Lamport, & Co.. Good with no dust jacket; Spine cocked, boards worn, owner signature on . front free endpaper, minor foxing and soiling.. N.D.. Hardcover. Circa 1840. Brown blindstamped cloth with "Parley's Select Library" blindstamped on front and rear boards. Gilt title and design of children on spine. Color frontispiece plate with cupids, birds, and floral design with titles "Parley's Library, Fairy Tales by Peter Parley, New York, Nafis & Cornish, lithographed by Benjamin Hecht, of New York. [2], 192 pp. Measures 6 x 4.25 inches. A collection of eleven short stories which have elements of the supernatural and don't seem to have been written for a juvenile audience. They include: The Storm Lights of Anzaska, Monos and Daimones, The Iron Shroud, The Rock of the Candle, The Sisters, Der Frieschutz, The Comet, A Night in a Church, The Dummburg, The Legend of Bethel Rock, and The Oratory. WorldCat shows several variations of this title, many of which attribute authorship of this story collection to popular American children's book author and publisher Samuel G. Goodrich. He did indeed pen many children's books under his pseudonym Peter Parley, but this is probably not one of them and is likely one which Cornish, Lamport & Co/Nafis & Cornish put together to capitalize on Peter Parley's popularity. The second story, for instance, Monos and Daimones, shares both title and summary with Edward Bulwer-Lytton's 1830 ghost story, while the third, The Iron Shroud, is likely the same horror story set in the Castle of the Prince of Tolfi as was written by William Mudford in 1830. Adding another layer of confusion is the fact that this same collection of tales appears to have been packaged as volume I of a two-volume "Tales of Terror", published in Boston by E. Littlefield in 1840, as part of the publisher's "Economical Library". Description of OCLC number 198374154 theorize that Samuel G. Goodrich may have been the editor of this short story anthology, despite specifically denying connection with this title in his 1857 Recollections of a Lifetime. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall .
