About This Item
Boston: John P. Jewett and Co, 1853. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Octavo, 224pp. A crisp, clean copy, very good or better in the publisher's brown blind-stamped cloth. Spine ends gently worn, and a touch if internal foxing, though most of the contents remain bright. Scarce volume which compiles a number of arguments on the question of "colonization," in this context referring to the efforts by some Abolitionists and others to create a colony of black Americans in Africa. Stebbins, an Abolitionist from upstate New York, was a correspondent of Frederick Douglass and an outspoken opponent of the colonization movement, on the grounds that it was unfair and unjust to African-Americans. Somewhat well-distributed among special collections libraries, although some records for physical holdings appear to be electronic/digital versions. Auction records are scant, and we note no other copies in commerce as of this listing. Rare. Work (p. 362), Sabin 91011. LCP Af-Am Cat. 9780.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
