Front board nearly fully detached. Ex Libris plate to front pastedown. Moderate staining, foxing and tanning to pages, pastedowns and free endpapers. More prominent to text block edges. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate corner bumping and edge-wear with visible tanning, staining and scuffing overall. Spine has moderate rubbing and tanning with noticeable splitting and crushing to joints and ends.

Approx. 4 5/8" x 7 1/4" size; bound in 20th century oatmeal linen cloth, brick-red morocco leather spine, contrasting spine title-labels, gilt, modern marbled endpapers. Spine labels in thick leather and the structure of the binding has the appearance of a skilled better-than-average amateur effort. Light rubbing and wear; very good condition.. Later Edition. Some light spotting, upper blank margin of title-page excised. Binding rubbed and a little worn at extremities, front flyleaf excised. Ownership inscriptions dated 1799 and 1836 to front pastedown. A rare provincial printing of Gay’s fables - ESTC locates just three copies, BL, Oxford, and Cambridge. ESTC T13862.

Marbled endpapers. New endpapers, lacking the original blanks. Illustrated with engravings on wood preceding each fable. Though several institutional records suspect Thomas Bewick to be the illustrator, we believe the illustrator to be a different artist, among several of lesser repute commissioned to emulate Bewick's engravings after their initial commercial success. A scarce edition, with only one copy held institutionally. NEAR FINE. The title page with former owner names of the period at the topmost, a hint of darkening to the margins of the title page, otherwise is Fine having been exceptionally well maintained. The text-block is bright and completely clean and the handsome modern binding remains crisp and new. As pictured.
