Oxford at the Clarendon Press, 1870. Hardcover. Very Good. Sixth edition, 724 pages. Full leather, leather label on spine, some light sunning to boards. Contemporary former owner signature. Scattered marginal pencil notes. Very good. An Exposition of the Creed was a work by John Pearson which was first published in 1659. It was based on sermons he delivered at St Clements, Eastcheap. It was one of the most influential works on the Apostles' Creed in the Anglican Church. This edition is revised throughout, notes verified and corrected, and references complete, as needed. Quotations from Hebrew and Rabbinical sources are revised and explained by R. Payne Smith of the Bodleian. Editions referenced are in the Index, and pages of the folio edition of 1723 have been included in the margins.

Text blocks firm, with brown marbled pastedowns, pages unmarked and crisp; brown edges.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). John Pearson (1613-1686) was an English clergyman in the seventeenth century, regarded as one of the most erudite theologians of the era, becoming Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity at Cambridge as well as Master of Jesus College and then Trinity College, before becoming Bishop of Chester. His Exposition of the Creed is highly regarded as a work of English dogmatic theology.
