  • Hardcover
Folio, modern boards, 98 (of 100) hand colored lithographed plates. Lacking the preliminaries and text, this volume is plates only. Missing plates 41 & 42. Some minor toning, but plates a bright and clean and very attractive. Some wear to binding. Sclater (1829-1913) was a highly prolific naturalist who produced over 1,400 publications. He was appointed Secretary of the Zoological Society in London in 1859, and was a world famous expert on tropical species. Osbert Slavin helped Sclater with the text in Exotic Ornithology, but the plates were done by Joseph Smit. While the work originally was to include new bird species from around the world, the project was scaled back to focus on birds in the southern portion of the United States. The book was issued in thirteen parts between1866-1869. Exotic Ornithology included 104 species belong to 51 genera. There is typically one bird per plate, and in a complete edition each page would be followed by a page of text.

Description:
Halifax & Huddersfield: Printed For The Author. 1788-89. First Edition of "the earliest British work devoted exclusively to fungi" (Henrey II p. 136). A supplementary volume, not present here, was published in 1791. "About 220 of 231 [species] are easily identified, and have been accepted and quoted under various names in their works by subsequent European authors, as Persoon, Fries, Rabhenhorst, and others on the Continent, and by Berkeley, Cooke, Stephenson, and Massee in [Britain]. Many were species new to science, and others previously undescribed in Britain.Bolton describes his specimens with great acuteness, in clear, concise terms, and this.when they were little understood.'. (Crossland) About the author very little is known except that he was a self-taught naturalist and skilful artist, who was a friend and correspondent of the eminent naturalists of the day, including Peter Collinson, William Hudson, and Philip Miller. All of the drawings and etchings for the work were… Read More

Description:
United Kingdom, 1840. Book. Very Good. Leather. Original. 24 x 29.5 Cm. A collection of 43 very fine, early/mid 19th century, comparatively large (approximately 285 x 235 mm), original watercolour studies of different species of South African Ericas, each autographed with the species name. Housed in a red straight-grained morocco case with closing flap and the words "In Memoriam Madre Mia" (in memory of my mother). While there is no reference to the originator of these studies, they are executed in a style close to that used by Henry C. Andrews for his Monograph on the Genus Erica (1804-1812). The present watercolours do not correspond directly to those but the composition is similiar and it is possible they were executed by Andrews in connection with the publication. Notwithstanding, they are highly accomplished, reminiscent of the best botanical artists of the day. They are painted onto fine-textured card; this card for a number of paintings is blind embossed to the corners… Read More

Engraving with etching, aquatint and hand-coloring on 1836 watermarked J. Whatman hand-made paper. Unusually wide, untrimmed margins showing the pulls from the binder's signatures on the left margin and the gilt to the top edge. "I closed my eyes, and was passing away into the world of dreaming existence, when suddenly there burst on my soul the serenade of the Rose-breasted bird, so rich, so mellow, so loud in the stillness of the night, that sleep fled from my eyelids. Never did I enjoy music more: it thrilled through my heart, and surrounded me with an atmosphere of bliss. One might easily have imagined that even the Owl, charmed by such delightful music, remained reverently silent. Long after the sounds ceased did I enjoy them, and when all had again become still, I stretched out my wearied limbs, and gave myself up to the luxury of repose." John James Audubon

They were imported from Borneo and travelled throughout Europe, public viewing was possible in Antwerp, Bruxelles and Paris. Within a year they died from stress and pneumonia. London: T. Curtis, 1806. Very good +. This is a hand colored copper plate engraving. The print measures 5.5 x 9.25 inches, with a plate mark of 4.5 x 7.75. It is a beautiful decorative antique print expertly colored and beautifully composed. This particular plate has been trimmed at the rough edge. "The Botanical Magazine; or Flower-Garden Displayed, is an illustrated publication which began in 1787. The longest running botanical magazine, it is widely referred to by the subsequent name Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Each of the issues contains a description, in formal yet accessible language, and is renowned for featuring the work of two centuries of botanical illustrators. Many plants received their first publication on the pages, and the description given was enhanced by the keenly detailed illustrations. The first issue, in… Read More
