Exhibition of the Great National Painting "The Battle of Gettysburg" at Strawbridge & Clothier's . . . Lectures by James Drummond Ball by Strawbridge & Clothier - 1912

No date of publication; this exhibition was advertised in the Philadelphia Inquirer in Oct. 1912. The 20-foot long painting "The Battle of Gettysburg" was first shown in 1870 in Boston. It depicted the repulse of the charge by Longstreet's First Corps against the Union troops, now commonly called Pickett's Charge. (This is not about the cyclorama painted by Paul Philippoteaux.) "The Battle of Gettysburg" was painted by James Walker under the direction of John B. Bachelder (1825-1894), an American historian, painter, and photographer. This pamphlet advertised a "Limited Time" exhibition of the painting at the Strawbridge & Clothier's store at 8th and Market in Philadelphia in October 1912. James Drummond Ball was to give lectures six times so that "visitors may have each detail of the picture explained." The last page lists "Facts" about the painting, including that it is "the most truthful battle picture in existence." In Fine Condition: clean and crisp.
