The author left Baltimore on August 1, 1834, traveled to Virginia Springs, to Nashville, to Louisville, to St. Louis where, with his son, he bought a wagon to travel to Little Rock & Hot Springs, to New Orleans, to Mobile, to Richmond where the tour ended in Feb, 1835. He was one of the few important travelers as an expert geologist. Since his travels were entirely through the South, it provides an account of an educated Briton who was opposed to American democratic institutions and saw it as a very low level society though he thought highly of the South's physical resources (Clark, "Travels in the Old South".
