lviii+241 pages with index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with black lettering to spine and cover in original pictorial jacket. Edited with an introduction by Robert L Carneiro. From the library of Van Kemper. First edition. The study of cultural evolution is once again being actively pursued and Spencer is beginning to be recognized as the thinker who first organized ideas about cultural evolution in a way that made intelligible the broad sweep of human history. There is also renewed recognition of the fact that Spencer was instrumental in winning support for the theory of organic evolution. This book includes two important sections from Spencer's masterpiece, Principles of Sociology--one dealing with the structure and function of society. The editor has provided an illuminating introduction in which he describes Spencer's early scientific interests, his ethnological studies, and his literary output. "Spencer deliberately set out to survey all orders of phenomena," writes Carneiro, "and to show that they were the determinate results of the operation of a universal process. To this endeavor he brought an extraordinary command of scientific fact and unrivaled powers of synthesis and generalization." Robert V. Kemper, born in San Diego, California, on November 21, 1945, resides in Dallas, Texas, where he is Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1971 from the University of California at Berkeley and spent the academic year 1971-1972 there as a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow in Mexican American Studies before joining the SMU faculty. At SMU, he has served as Chair of the Department of Anthropology, President of the Faculty Senate, and member of the University Board of Trustees. His research interests include migration and urbanization, history of anthropology, community development, tourism, Mexico, and the United States. His numerous publications include Anthropologists in Cities (1974), Migration and Adaptation: Tzintzuntzan Peasants in Mexico City (1977), Migration Across Frontiers: Mexico and the United States (1979), Chronicling Cultures: Long-Term Field Research in Anthropology (2002), and Urban Life (5th ed., 2010). He has served as President of the Society for Latin American Anthropology and the Society for Urban Anthropology, as well as Editor of Human Organization, Editor for Social-Cultural Anthropology of the American Anthropologist, and Associate Editor for Urban Anthropology. Condition: Kemper's signature to front end paper. Corners bumped. Jacket with edge wear with some closed tears else a very good copy in like jacket.

The University of Chicago Press, Chicago & London, 1967. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good/Poor Condition. 700 g; LVIII, 246 pages, last five pages blank, includes references cited, index. Photographic illustrated dustwrapper. The top edge of the text block shows signs of foxing, and there is some softness to the hinges. The text appears to be free of any marginalia. The dust jacket is badly rubbed, and chipped, with the front fold over flap almost detached. Now protected. Bertrand Russell, in his History of Western Philosophy, does not even mention Spencer. The reason was twofold: the principal subject of his investigation -- cultural evolution -- began to lose popularity at the beginning of the 20th century; also, many of his most illuminating ideas had been absorbed into the general domain of modern thought. A reverse trend has now set in, however. The study of cultural evolution is once again being actively pursued, and Spencer is beginning to be recognised as the… Read More
