Blue blind embossed decoration to bds and Gilt spine title, original owners name to first blank Reginald Porter and dated March 1861 with purchase receipt for £1 laid in. pp xiii 503 with 15 Plates. CONDITION Mild rubbing to edges, cnrs canted, spine head and heel just starting, gutter crack to paper both ends, mull slightly loose though not worn, light foxed to plates due to paper type. Contemporary newpaper article pasted to inside rear listing contents of Churches and Cathedrals in Exeter. A few small tidy notations to margins mostly in pencil. Bright and crisp copy. Overweight. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/N/A. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Bruxelles: Johannis Mommartius, 1656 A good copy of the second edition of this extremely rare work. First printed in Venice in 1652. Baldassare Bonifacio was a professor among many other talents and this work is a cabinet of curiosities - gathering a wide range of stories and recollections - including tales from classical antiquity of women who had serpent lovers. In full leather binding with raised bands and gilt decoration to the spine and tooling to the boards. It has had an old leather repair relaying the tooled front board onto plain leather. It is clean, showing wear to top and bottom of spine and edges and with a broken front hinge and weak rear hinge, although the board is still attached. The contents are in superb condition given the age of the book. There is a biographical note written in ink in english on a preliminary and 2-3 signs of previous ownershiip. Contemporary sprinkled calf with faint remains of gilt-tooled spine. All page edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Running title: Essais de Politique, & de Morale. Front fixed endpaper bears armorial bookplate of P. Daubignard with motto "Tacio quid mihi placet." A few words written in an old hand on title page. Translated from English by Claude Pierre Goujet; imprint is false -- possibly printed in Paris. ESTC, 213884. The second part has separate title page and pagination. In Very Good- Condition: front joint weak; back joint starting at head of spine; loss of leather at ends of spine; corners rubbed; very occasional foxing; otherwise clean and tight.
