(vi), xvi, (5)-287 pp. Recent dark blue half calf over marbled boards, spine with gilt ruled compartments, lettered direct to one panel and decorated to the others, all edges untrimmed. 52 folding plates of naval manoeuvres with partial hand colouring. The plates with varying degrees of foxing as often, a very good copy overall. "...one of the first British accounts of tactics, as opposed to a work in French translation" (ODNB). The first part was privately printed in 1782 and published properly in 1790 with the following three parts in 1797, this being the first collected edition.

Recent half-calf hardback with marbled paper covered boards and maroon gilt lettered title piece to spine. In very good shape: firm, square and showing well. Contents sound and tight, not showing any pen-marks, no evidence of worm or insect damage, and not from a library so no such stamps or labels, just foxed and evenly browned (as usual with this work). Size: 4to (290mm x 220mm). Complete with 52 engraved folding plates showing naval manoeuvres with hand-coloured dispositions. Note: Part one was first published in 1790, with parts two, three and four appearing in 1797; thus this is the first collected edition. One of the most important works on naval tactics published in the age of sail. Hence the fact it was used by Admiral Nelson during the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar.
