Affixed to the bottom portion of the front wrappers is a printed slip for the Paris publisher, Jules Renouard, who apparently acquired part of the edition. . Large octavo. Wrappers partially browned, spine split in several places, but a very good copy, in its original state, in a full morocco clamshell slipcase. Quetelet (1796-1874) was a Belgian astronomer, mathematician, statistician and sociologist. He founded and directed the Brussels Observatory. He became interested in the ˙young science of probability and statistics as an astronomer to explain measurement errors, but became one of the first to see its applications to the social sciences. Deparcieux (1703-68), was a maker of sundials at Paris and the author of several other interesting mathematical works. "After long investigations of tontines, individual families, and religious communities, Deparcieux published his results in the famous Essai sur les probablités..., one of the first statistical works of its kind. It consists of treatises on annuities, mortality, and life annuities. Deparcieux showed a real progress in his theoretical explanation of the properties of the tables of mortality. His tables were for a long time the only ones on life expectancies in France, - "Deparcieux was the first to construct correct life tables." Smith, History of Mathematics, II, p. 530.

One of his best known works was his 1534 mathematics treatise 'Instrumentum Primi Mobilis'. This book was Apian's studies in trigonometry, and, according to Tomash & Williams,
"Apian published a table of sines that, for the first time, was based on a circle with a radius of a power of ten, in this case one hundred thousand. The values of the functions were thus decimal and were easily adapted to any situation in which the defining circle was a decimal power."
This 1534 first edition is exceedingly rare and valuable. It contains the expected sine charts as well as numerous woodcut illustrations depicting protractor and arc readings. Note that this incredible work includes the original title page, which features a woodcut after Albrecht Durer.

Softcover 4to, 44pp. No date, but an article about the book appears in the Dec 3, 1971 San Jose State "Spartan Daily" newspaper. Adhesive remainder to the upper left cover, mild rubbing and edgewear. Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.
