About This Item
Paris: Chez Mme. Veuve Lepetit. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Signed by Other. Signed by the publisher at page of limitation of the first volume below the following: Les formalites voulues par la loi ayant ete remplies, je poursuivrai les contrefacteurs suivant toutes ses rigueurs. Seront regardes comme contrefaits tous exemplaires non revetus de ma signature. This is therefore not a counterfeit copy/set! The author Jacques Berthelemy was born in 1760 and died in 1830. This set, complete in four short, squat volumes bound in octavo format, was from the personal library of the Francophile, erotophile and bibliographer extraordinaire, Gershon Legman according to both his widow, Judith Legman and the former owner, Mr. Richard L. Press. They look lovely on the shelf. Tome Premier (1818): xviii [1], 20-556 pp., including Table des Matieres; Tome Second (1818): xvi + 478 pp., including Table des Matieres; Tome Troisieme (1818): xi + errata sheet + 468 pp., including Table des Matieres These three volumes are the standard 3rd edition, titled Revue et Corrigee. However, there is a 4th volume issued by the same publisher with no statement on the title page of the edition but it is clearly a revision of the 3rd edition. Tome IV: xii + 514 pp., including Table des Articles Contenus Dans ce Volume, showing the names of the author-contributors to this volume, ranging from Martin Luther to Cardinal Richilieu. O.C.L.C. shows only three library locations for Tome IV, which was published in 1830. Handsomely rebound in uniform three-quarters leather and with attractive marbled paper over boards. Some scattered light foxing throughout, even and unobtrusive. New, marbled endpapers, with some peeling away thereof to Tome I at gutter, probably from renegade glue post-repair. Previous owner's ex-libris ink-stamp at half-titles of all four volumes. The volume "Préjugés et reputations," here in its original edition of 1830, in fact completes the series "Of errors and prejudices" (the false title indicates "ERRORS and PREJUDICES WIDE IN THE VARIOUS CLASSES OF SOCIETY - Volume IV.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
