When published, described as "much too well known to need any introduction; no woman who takes part in any Public or Social life can afford to be without it". It now offers a window back into the lives and concerns of those women; it is divided into two main sections: Education, Professions and Social Life, and Philanthropic and Social Work. A random selection of the contents: lists of girls' schools, lists of women holding positions as lecturers in medicine, the position of women in (other) European countries, notes on laws affecting women and children etc etc. At least as informative are the advertisements- for schools, publications for nurses, uniforms etc for hospital nurses, charitable institutions ("Friendless and Fallen") and so on. Red cloth-covered boards, gilt titles to front board and spine, 418 pp plus blank pages for notes, index and 22 pages of advertisements. Condition notes: Boards rubbed, bumped and blotchy, but sound. Spine faded and soiled. Staining to front free end paper and to the edges of the first few pages, pencil pricing information to front free end paper, otherwise clean and unmarked.
