Red cloth binding with bevelled board edges and inset title on green cloth to front board. Gilt and black decoration to front board and spine. Blind decoration to rear board. All page edges gilt. Rubbing and light staining to boards. Wear to ends of spine. Split across head of spine with old repair. Binding a little loose with a few pages protruding slightly from page block and rubbing to edges. A little light foxing to text and plates. Complete with all 24 chromolithographic plates plus the illustrated title page. This copy includes an original pencil drawing by A.F. Lydon, bound in before the illustrated title. Drawing is signed by the artist: 'Buttermere Aug. 27 1868 A.F.L.'. A slightly worn but unique example. Overall condition is Good Plus. Size: 6.75 x 9.75 inches (17.5 x 25 cm). Hardback. Red cloth hardcover with bevelled edges, oval inset, beautiful decorative gold, black, red, purple, and green impressing. All edges gilt. Spine ends repaired. Some stains to cloth. A few dents to edges and bumped corners. Hinges repaired internally. Scuff on front pastedown. Foxing. The Lake District has long been considered to have some of England's loveliest scenery as this beautiful late Victorian illustrated book attests. Includes views of Windermere, Grasmere, Rydal Water, Ullswater, Coniston Lake, and Buttermere, along with descriptive text.

Illustrated with twenty-five chromolithograph plates from drawings by A.F. Lydon. Bound in green cloth stamped in black and gilt, beveled edge boards, all edges gilt. The front board contains an inset decoration on purple cloth with gilt, green, and red lettering. Vignette engraved title page, with a chromolithograph illustrating the page. Each lithograph presents a stunning illustration of the different lakes covered in the book. Contemporary owner's name dated 1886 with reference to the book as a wedding gift on the front pastedown. A lovely overview of several English lakes and the local history concerning each lake. A Very Good book with moderate foxing throughout, a small repair to the crown of the spine, and two very faint dampstains on the rear pastedown.
