London : Smith, Elder & Co., 1858. First edition. Thackeray's perceptive lectures on Swift, Congreve, Addison, Steele, Prior, Gay, Pope, Hogarth, Smollett, Fielding, Sterne and Goldsmith. Also bound in at the front of the present volume is Richard Hannay's "A Brief Memoir of the Late Mr Thackeray" (Edinburgh : Oliver & Boyd, 1864). Two volumes, bound in one. Foolscap 8vo (164 x 100mm). (32) + [iv],(342)pp. Bound in an elegant contemporary half red sealskin, banded and gilt; marbled edges and endleaves; cup-marks to covers, but otherwise a very good, clean and sound copy, with a distinguished provenance. From the library of the poet and essayist Austin Dobson (1840-1921), with his "Autant Icy Qu'Ailleurs" bookplate, designed by Alfred Parsons (1847-1920) and the library dispersal label. Also with the earlier "Thackeray" bookplate of the American essayist, critic and book-collector Laurence Hutton (1843-1904), who was presumably responsible for binding the two works together.
