Description:
London : W. Nicoll, 1769 A good copy of a very scarce work, originally issued as part of a two volume work called 'The City Remembrancer'. This consisted of 3 books, with separate title pages and pagination, on the Great Plague, Fire and Storm of London. The title page for the 'Remembrancer' states that the source material for the work is Dr Gideon Harvey's papers. Dr Harvey ?1640-?1700 became the king's 'Physician to the Tower'. He is known for a variety of medical works (and for using his writing to discredit other physicians). This copy has been rebound by Bath Municipal Reference Library, and is in a near fine buckram cloth binding with gilt title, reference number and date to spine. The internal endpaper joints are reinforced and there is the armorial library bookplate to the fep, together with some reference numbers at the top. There are no other library markings. The binder has introduced a new front blank and has probably misbound the Introduction, which should…

FORTE SCUTUM SALUS DUCUM: "A STRONG SHIELD IS THE SALVATION OF LEADERS"First edition of this two-part biography of Adrian Fortescue, "the greatest authority on the liturgy of the Roman Rite the English-speaking world has ever known" (Michael Davies) and the founder of The Church of St. Hugh of Lincoln in Letchworth. Complete in the uncommon original dust jacket.Adrian Fortescue was descended from Blessed Adrian Fortescue, the recusant martyr beheaded at the Tower of London in July 1539 and beatified by Leo XIII in 1895 (just three years before the younger Fortescue was ordained). The versatile Fortescue embarked on a brilliant career, writing extensively on the Eastern churches and the Roman liturgy, before his untimely death in 1923. The work consists of a series of brief character sketches by the Rev. John Vance, followed by a Personal Memoir by J.W. Fortescue, Father Fortescue's nephew. The text is supplemented with a frontispiece portrait (by Mrs. M.D. Spooner), a photographic portrait, and six…

Description:
This book is in fairly good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards, as well as spots on the outside back cover board. There is minimal bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, with some vertical fraying and warping, but the pages are clear of markings. A few of the pages are dog-eared and edges torn. "The Forsyte Saga was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called 'The Man of Propery; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us. The word Saga might be objected to on the ground that it connotes the heroic and that there is little of heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. Discounting for the gigantic stature and blood-thirstiness of…

Cambridge:: Lutterworth Press, 2012., 2012. 8vo. viii, [4], 297, [1] pp. Figs., index. Pictorial wrappers. INSCRIBED by author to Dr. Dennis Gibbs. Near fine. ISBN: 9780718892760 "An exploration of the history of British sport, viewed through the lens of the life and work of Samuel Johnson and his friend and correspondent Hester Thrale. / In "Swimming with Dr Johnson and Mrs Thrale," Julia Allen takes a sideways look at sport, health and exercise in the eighteenth century, and in so doing reveals unfamiliar sides of the eponymous characters she uses as guides and commentators. Samuel Johnson does battle with the rough breakers at Brighton as energetically as he did with any of his verbal opponents; and Hester Thrale – herself 'a good waterspaniel' – provides wry observations, notably on what men decided women might decently be allowed to do in that foreign country that is the past. / Allen starts with the medical theories underpinning notions about exercise, the role of the physician and the…
