Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is in Very Good++ or better condition. It is the correct first issue with the appropriate list of 'New Fiction' titles on the rear panel. Some small losses at the spine ends but all the lettering is complete. Light rubbing to the folds and corners with some toning to the spine and folds. Light age related markings with a small light pen mark to the lower front cover. The wrapper presents very well in the removable Brodart archival cover. The sole UK printing published by The Golden Cockerel Press, London in 1947. A limited edition illustrated with 58 wood engravings by John Buckland Wright, some full page. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with original quarter vellum spine and crimson buckram boards with a gilt design on the front cover. Top edge gilt, others uncut. The spine is lettered in gilt and the book has been bound as issued by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. This is number '359' of 500 copies. The book was printed in Caslon type on Arnold s hand-made paper with the Golden Cockerel Press watermark. The boards and vellum spine are clean. Free from inscriptions. Some light browning in places affecting a few outer page edges but not the illustrations. This browning appears to be universal with certain pages of this book and does not detract from its beautiful production. Buckland-Wright worked on this title from 1943 until 1947 and this is undoubtedly his masterpiece. A very sharp copy of a handsome production. The book is protected in a loose Mylar archival cover. With frontis and fourteen mask images, each are titled and initialed by the artist in pencil printed silk screen and letter-press in 24 pt Plantin. Number 65' of an edition of only 125 signed copies. The 15 proofs (50 x 37cm) were issued as 15 unbound, four page sections on Barcham Green rag-made housed within a paper wraparound folder. The whole housed within a blue cloth folder with silver titling and the original publisher s canvas slip-case.
