About This Item
King Mountain, NC: J.A. Neisler; Committee to Elect Godzilla for President, 1966. Newsletter. Three issues of the mimeographed 8.5x14 inch newsletter, unnumbered, 4 to 8 pages per issue, year penned in corner of two issues, another with notation "Viet Nam" in corner. Two issues have circular marks and pinholes at the top of the first page where "Vote for Godzilla" pins were apparently once affixed. One issue is signed in pen by Neisler. Also included is a bumpersticker from the campaign, with vertical fold crease. The tongue-in-cheek campaign, intended as a protest against the Vietnam War, got coverage in college papers, and correspondence from supportive jokesters makes up much of the content of these issues. Berkeley student Harry Nussdorf writes in an open letter to LBJ, "Our candidate, Godzilla, has for years been the star of horror movies. When he assumes office on Jan. 20, 1969, a great void will be left in the ranks of American monsters. We do not know if you are aware of it, but you, Lyndon Johnson, are presently acquiring the reputation of being the worst monster that this country has ever produced! Do you realize the potential that you have as a movie star?
