The author tells this story of "an aid worker, a warlord, radical Islam, and the politics of oil" via the device of a mini-biography of Englishwoman Emma McCune. McCune (1964-93), a strikingly beautiful young aid worker, fell in love with the Sudan and improbably married a southern Sudanese warlord Riek Machar and became involved in the sink of Sudanese politics. Quite a tale indeed. Scroggins covered the Sudanese famine as a correspondent for the Atlanta newspapers. Jacket praise from Robert D. Kaplan, Kati Marton, Alex Shoumatoff, Francesca Marciano and David Lamb. Her book won The Nation magazine's Ridenhour Book Prize.
