Emiliano Zapata y el agrarismo en México (volumes 1 and 2) by Magaña, Gildardo - 1937

Mexico City: Partido Nacional Revolucionario, Secretaria de Prensa y Propaganda, 1937. Two volumes, inscribed to a friend of the author. The first volume (330p.) is inscribed by Magaña to Sergio Bribiesca [Elvira]. The second volume (424p.) is inscribed to the same recipient, but in a different hand, perhaps by a secretary. Laid into the latter volume is a friendly letter from Norberto Trevino Zapata, Mexican ambassador in Rome, to Sergio Bribiesca Elvira, on embassy letterhead, dated 1973. Both books are bound in plain maroon buckram with matching tooled leather spines, very good. More volumes were later published, but these are the only two to have appeared during Magaña's lifetime. Magaña, a revolutionary politician who is said to have taught Pancho Villa to read, replaced Zapata after his death to serve as commander-in-chief of the Zapatista army, supporting Obregón in his conquest of the capital. Magaña was rewarded with the Ministry of Agriculture, the realm of social reform that was of special significance to the Zapatista movement. He went on to found the Confederación Nacional Agraria, and between the publication of these two volumes, he was elected governor of his native state of Michoacán in 1936.
