About This Item

New York: Hendricks House, Inc, 1953. Hardcover. 8vo. Brown cloth with gilt lettering, dust jacket. xiv, 268pp. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear, with several small edge chips. Errata slip tipped opposite half-title page. A tight and attractive first edition of this interpretation of Emerson's life and influence. Front flyleaf bears ownership signature of one C.D. Mead -- presumably the same C. David Mead who edited the 1970 collection "The American Scholar Today: Emerson's Essay and Some Critical Views" and author of a handbook himself -- the oft-reprinted "Prentice Hall Handbook for Writers." Below this is a fine archival decorative-edged bookplate bearing the full bold signature in turquoise fineline of famed Walt Whitman biographer Gay Wilson Allen (1903-95) -- who in 1981 authored the Pulitzer Prize-nominated "Waldo Emerson: A Biography." A great association copy of this rather uncommon Emerson study.
