About This Item

New York: Hearthside Press Inc, 1966. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. 8vo. 224 p.p. B&W illustrations and photos throughout. Quarter bound in gold cloth with blue cloth boards, black lettering to spine. Bumping to spine ends. Foxing to top edge. Dust jacket has several chips and creases, a few short tears, wear to joints and edges, and foxing. Sporadic foxing to interior, light damp staining to endpapers. This is the first book which traces the history of ornamental needlework from ancient Jewish life, through the Middle Ages, to contemporary times. It includes pictures of embroidered and woven objects gathered from all over the world, with many examples from present-day religious life. Ark curtains, wimpels, Torah wrappers and door panels, Bible markers, pulpit covers, shawls and shawl fringes, cushions, wedding canopies, and tapestries are shown. Since the Jewish home has always been considered an extension of the synagogue, handsome ornaments for home and person--tablecloths, bread and matzo covers, Tefillen bags, etc.--are included.
