Publisher's original brown blindstamped cloth, gilt lettered, one corner a little bumped, one or two tiny spots, light toning but otherwise a fine, tight, crisp copy. First Edition of Holmes' first novel, the probable second printing, according to BAL 8801, though BAL notes that its suggested sequence is "presented with some hesitation" and "should be considered tentative and used with caution." Johnson, High Spots of American Literature, p.42: 'A novel of pre-natal influence, in which Holmes utilizes his knowledge as a physician.'.
