London: John Murray, 1946. Gold title on red cloth boards which are unmarked with no wear. Internally there is foxing to endpapers and to closed edges else clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has age darkening and is price clipped. x + 251 pages. Holland House, now alas roofless and ruined as the result of German bombs, has proved to be in the past a mine of literary and historic treasure and the source of many books. Luckily the mine is not yet exhausted, as this volume shows. Princes, politicians, authors, soldiers, scientists, divines, wits and dandies, all were irresistibly drawn to Holland House, ready to risk the lash of Lady Holland's tongue for the sake of her kindly husband and the good company which they provided. He letters, like her tongue, were barbed, often critical, often surprisingly kind, of no great literary grace but of forcible expression and full of interest. This series of letters to her son Henry Edward, afterwards the 4th Earl and last Lord Holland, ranges over the field of political, social and literary life at one of its most notable periods. **** NOT EX LIB **** B2B. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
