And increasingly, statistics is set as a requirement in the already-crowded program of students in these disciplines. A statistics course designed to meet the needs of such students should be brief, ordinarily of a single quarter or semester; it should presuppose no technical background; and it should not require that the student learn a great deal of mathematics first. This book, written with such a course in mind, presents the student with the statistical techniques he is likely to need in his field of study. It aims at giving him an understanding of the reasoning underlying these techniques, for without such an understanding the technique must be learned by rote and hence soon evaporate. The methods covered are not peculiar to one field of application alone, but apply to all subjects in which statistics is used.
