London: Longman, 1813. [Economics] FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. lii; 496. Original tan calf with raised bands to spine, gilt rules, red title label. Spotting to prelims and preface, otherwise contents clean. Binding lightly rubbed, crown of spine worn, tear to rear joint at head and tail. Overall an attractive copy of a particularly rare text, missing from many important Economics libraries; no copies have been recorded sold at auction and a survey of specialist booksellers' catalogues has been fruitless. Seven copies are held at UK institutions (BL, Birmingham, Cambridge, Edinburgh, London, LSE and Sheffield) and just two further copies worldwide (Tokyo and Wyoming). Smith was editor of the Law Journal in London and was counsel for Daniel Isaac Eaton who published Thomas Paine's Age of Reason. His magnum opus 'The Science of Money' appeared in 1813 and in 1817 he was appointed second fiscal officer in the sugar-trade colony of Demerara-Essequibo (British Guiana). Formerly a Dutch territory, the local currency remained the Guilder, despite British control. Smith was accompanied to the Caribbean by his daughter and son, John Prince Smith (jr.,1809-1874), later a political economist and free trade liberal. Smith senior died in Demerara the year before the mass slave rebellion occurred. Bloy, Marjorie. Biographical Dictionary of British Economists.

Cannes. 1966. NP. 1966. Quarto (285mm x 233mm). 20 typed sheets in French (rectos only), legibly hand-corrected throughout by Brassai in black ink. Housed in a black cloth album, with each sheet in a separate clear plastic file. In excellent condition, the final page a little creased and with minor loss to right-hand side, affecting one letter. Overall fresh and clean. ------ A superb unpublished and heavily corrected manuscript in French, in which Brassai recounts his visit to Picasso, a long-standing friend, at his home near Cannes. Brassai, who photographed much of Picasso's work in the 1940s, had published Conversations with Picasso in 1964, in which he created an intimate portrait of Picasso, covering their friendship and artistic collaboration, and recording each of their meetings with minute detail. Picasso said of the volume, "Read this book if you want to understand me." This account is written in a similar style, and during the course of the afternoon, Picasso speaks about his nostalgia… Read More

Description:
London: Longman,, 1813. A call for sound money in the aftermath of the Bullion Report First edition. The work defends free trade and opposes devaluation and paper currency on grounds of natural law. It was written in the context of the Bullion Report, sharply increasing public debt with the Napoleonic Wars, and the expansion of paper currency. Smith charts the nature of money, its history, the variations in its value, its increase by commerce, the duties of the state to uphold fair coinage, and the banking system. Smith opposes paper currency, as threatening the ruin of the state, and as inherently inflationary. Primarily a barrister, Smith (1774-1822) edited the New Law Journal (3 vols., 1804–6) and published a collection of reports of cases in the king's bench between 1803 and 1806. His major legal case was acting as counsel for Daniel Isaac Eaton who published Thomas Paine's Age of Reason. He took a close interest in economics, and aside from this work also published Advice for the Petitioners… Read More
