About This Item
Stanford, California: Standford University Press, 1960. First Edition. Thick Octavo. 463p. index. One of the most colorful yet neglected American transportation history has been re-created in this definitive history of the electric inter-urbans. From their early construction in the early 1900's to their sharp decline after World War II as the family automobile became ubiquitous. Part I describes the construction, technology and how passenger and freight traffic led to the expansion of American in the first half of the 20th Century. Trains Magazine said "a first-rate work of such detail and discernment that is might well serve as a model for all corporate biographies." Marvelous scholarship with an expanse of boyish enthusiasm and 37 well-chosen photographs. The details of even the smallest lines make this an essential reference. Bound in gray cloth pictorially stamped in black depicting a railcar, spine lettering black, endpapers are maps. A very nice copy in unclipped pictorial dust jacket with some edge wear and a few tiny chips.
