Protected by a tissue guard which has become yellowed and somewhat foxed. Within the text there are another 16 black-and-white contemporary illustrations. Red coloured cloth binding with tilt embossed design on the front panel and gilt titles to the backstrip. Gilt to the top text block edge.  Bumping and rubbing to the backstrip edges and to the book corners. Bumping to the lower book edge along with wear . darkening to the top book edges and flecking to the front fore book edges. Minor flecking to the front book panel along with some grubs and some are fading to the rear book panel and to the strip. Browning and quite heavy foxing to the text block edges. Browning and offset tanning to the endpapers and age toning to the internal text. Foxing present throughout the text, but more pronounced at the beginning and at the end of the text. The hinge has split between the verso of the half title page and the verso of the frontispiece and the underlying webbing is visible. Her mind was deeply tinged with the philosophical and metaphysical ideas which accompanied the approach of the mental unrest preceding the Revolution. She was thinker and scientist, precieuse and pedant, but nonetheless a coquette -- in short, a woman of contradictions. She was so strikingly original, so marked in her individuality, that she was worthy to be judged on her own merits, and to stand alone in the eyes of prosperity, if historians have persisted in regarding her merely as a satellite of Voltaire. This she would assuredly have resented.
