Limassol, Cyprus: James Bendon, 1999. First Edition. Thick Quarto. 874 pages, index, including appendices of Arabic Letters and numerals, spellings and currency evaluations. Egypt had the first handstamp postal markings of Africa and was the first non-colonial African country to issue stamps as well as the first to print its own stamps. It was a pioneer in the issue of booklet stamps, the use of airmail, and the use of photogravure for stamp production. Dr. Peter A.S. Smith has served on the Expert Committee on the American Philatetic Society as well as an honorary member of Egypt Philatetic Society. His smaller work The Traveling Post Offices of Egypt pointed the complexity of placing the stamps of Egypt in context. This book is quite heavy and has the original dust jacket which seldom described but as shown in our description is quite significant for the collector. This edition has hundreds of images including colored plates which show the richness and detail of the most important stamps from Egypt.Bound in brown cloth, spine lettering gilt, pictorial endpapers, in dust jacket with with light chipping, closed edge tears and wear. A very good copy.
