About This Item
Porto: Livraria Chardron De Lelo, 1913. Paper Wraps. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Portuguese Language. 228p. The author was Portuguese but spent much time in Italy where he wrote this classic poem. It was devoted to Saint Mary of Egypt (344?-421?). She left her home at age 12 and came to Alexandria where for seventeen years she was a prostitute. She embarked on a ship bound for the holy land though not out of devotion but assuming here was an area where she could satisfy her insatiable lust. While hoping to seduce devoted pilgrims in Jerusalem, she was struck by a force that led to her conversion and for forty-seven years she lived in the desert subsisting entirely on herbs. The poem is dedicated to her.
