Launceston: Author?. 1952. [60]pp, illus. Stapled in stiff wrappers. A very good clean copy. ***Markham's manuscript journal is in the Mitchell Library - here it fills 19 pages, commencing 17 March 1883, when he departed Gravesend on board 'Warrior', and quickly moves to Van Diemen's Land. Markham toured the island, but spent only seven months there, departing for New Zealand in February 1834. His brief journal comments on the places he passed through, some of the leading colonists, and the colony's whaling industry. If he is to be believed, he took a couple of remarkable liberties at Governor Arthur's table during 'a dull dinner'. The booklet also includes essays by Karl von Stieglitz on Lt-Governors Collins, Davey, Sorell & Arthur; Port Arthur and the Blacks & Lieut Jeffreys. .

Oblong format, unpaged, 47 pages, black and white sketches and a biographical preface by The Hon. Mr. Justice Crawford. Limited edition, signed by Von Steiglitz, of 400 copies of which 300, numbered 1 to 300, are for sale. This is number 91. Thomas Scott was Assistant Surveyor General of Van Diemen's Land 1821-1836. The jacket is bumped at the edges has suffers from very minor insect damage at the head and along the lower bend of the front flap; there is an ownership signature on the front end paper, a discrete bookshop label on the front paste down and on a reference to the Rev. Thomas Knopwood, the previous owner has crossed out Thomas and neatly written Robert on the blank edge. Overall a clean, unmarked and solid copy.
