About This Item
Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1969. 1st . Hardcover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. First printing. 8vo, hardcover, dustjacket. Text is Very Good with no owner's name, some spotting to rear endpaper, very minor wear to cloth. Only significant flaw is some staining to one corner of the rear endpaper, otherwise would be close to Fine. Fragile dust jacket is not price-clipped, very slightly sun-faded (much less than usual), without any visible tears or chips, just very light wear to extremities. A superb copy, much above-average for this fragile and uncommon Canlit classic. Scans available. SIGNED on the title page, without dedication.
Synopsis
The Edible Woman, a 1969 novel that helped to establish Margaret Atwood as a prose writer of major significance, is the story of a young woman whose sane, structured, consumer-oriented world suddenly slips strangely out of focus. Following her engagement, Marian feels her body and her self are becoming separated. As Marian begins endowing food with human qualities that cause her to identify with it, she finds herself unable to eat, repelled by metaphorical cannibalism.
