NY and Los Angeles: Angelina Book Concern, 1906. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 8vo. Portrait frontispiece and 22 illustrations. Original cloth gilt title and vignette. Translated by Julius Behnke, Professor of Modern Languages, Occidental College, Los Angeles. With his printed photograph tipped-in, and his presentation inscription: 'Yours for progress / without end / Julius C. Behnke.' Robert Ernest Cowan's copy, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. During 1852 and 1853, the author was at the mines. Covers Vigilance Committee, Indians and Game, Chinese Massacre, Mining on the Yuba. Double page map of the Feather and Yuba Rivers. Inner hinge repaired, else a near fine copy. Cowan, pp. 387-88; Rocq, 10175; Howes L-177; Wheat 123.
